Coventry Wedding Photographer – Location Shoot

Venue for Engagement Session: Bishops Park, Fulham, London

I caught the train from Coventry and met Alex and Andy on a wet morning in November on Fulham Palace Road.  We decided to grab a coffee in a hope the rain would blow over.  It gave us chance to get to know each other and for me to explain the cameras I would be using.  I had the digital Leica M9 to capture the majority of the photos and also my 1950s Leica M3 film camera.  I had a part roll of black and white Kodak T-Max 100 to finish in the camera and would then shoot colour film, Fujicolor C200.  I normally use Kodak Portra but C200 can be quite nice too.

We were in luck. The rain stopped so we took a walk along the bank of the River Thames in an area known as Bishops Park and I got shooting.  I have a very relaxed photography style and I would like to think that Alex and Andy were soon at ease in front of the camera.  My small Leica cameras are very friendly and in no way intimidating so all in all it lead to a fun and sucessful morning.  I left London with a smile and felt very fortunate to have met two very kind and genuine people.  I had never met Alex and Andy until today but the morning was like enjoying good company with friends.  I am now counting down to Alex and Andy’s wedding in 2015!

Here are a few sample images (from Flickr and additional ones) (Please excuse the order and variety of sizes!)

I met the couple at Lord Leycester Hospital, Warwick which is an amazing wedding venue. We had the wedding ceremony in one of the great halls and then managed to get the group photos done in the gardens before the rain started. Everyone then moved down the road to Warwick Arms Hotel for the wedding breakfast and for the evening guests arriving.

Here is a selection of photos from the wedding day. Gemma and Ted purchased my black and white wedding photography package which includes all digital images in B&W tones. I had planned to do some additional medium format film photography but we didn’t get chance due to time constraints.

Digital Photos – Leica M9 + Leica Noctilux 50mm f1.0 at f1 for most of the day (including all group photos)(excluding some 21-28mm wide angle lens shots, 90mmf2 Summicron photos for the speeches and the 75mmf2 Cron photos for detail images).

Teresa & Wojciech – Romantic Evening with the Leica Noctilux

Matt Osborne Photography (Coventry UK)

Leica M9 location shoot in Sopot, Poland.  On my last evening in Poland I organised a couple photoshoot shot in a similar style to an engagement photo session but perhaps with a more romantic look to it.  Engagement shoots can be very  relaxed such as a countryside walk or something more stylised if the couple are happy in front of the camera.  There really is no limit and I tailor each engagement session to the couples requirements and taste.

Teresa and Wojciech arrived later than planned so the entire shoot was shot using my Leica Noctilux 50mm f1.0 (v2) at f1 and a high ISO between ISO 640 and ISO 1000 approximately.  Teresa is an agency represented catwalk model so was used to being in front of the camera however for boyfriend Wojciech it was his first time.  Wojciech was surprisingly relaxed in front of the camera and I was like a fly on the wall for the most part.  We enjoyed a coffee in the hotel restaurant, did some photos on the beach with the last available daylight then finished in the hotel room. The entire shoot was shot using available light only so the Leica Noctilux lens was a life saver with it’s wide f1 aperture.  I would have preferred to use off camera lights but had travelled light to Poland so didn’t have the option.

Here are a few samples from the shoot.  All are Leica M9 black and white in camera JPEGs:

If you are looking to book a pre-wedding engagement shoot this gives you an idea of what is possible using basic (albeit ‘exotic’ camera equipment) where I didn’t even speak the same language.  For more examples see my engagement photography posts on this blog.

Leica Wedding

Leica camera equipment used on the wedding day:
> Leica M9 body
> Voigtlander Nokton 35mm f1.2 ASPH ii lens – 75%
> Leica Noctilux 50mm f1.0 v2 lens

Lens Choice:

This wedding was very soon after my Leica Noctilux 50f1 lens purchase. I was concerned from all the out of focus/ soft focus example images posted on Flickr using this lens and from the reputation of the Noctilux being a soft lens wide open. I thought it might not be useable for paying clients. As such, I chose to use the CV Nokton 35f1.2 as my primary lens on the wedding day but tested the Noctilux lens for some detail photos and less important candid photography during downtime.
