Coventry Wedding Photographer – Location Shoot

Engagement Session, Coventry

As a Coventry wedding photographer that offers analogue film wedding photography and digital images, I like nothing bettter than engagement sessions. Here is another stylised engagement shoot in Coventry with models Harriett and Ashley. They are not a couple but work well together and it is then my job to then make it all look realistic.  All photos are 100% posed and directed by me yet they hopefully come across as natural.

For the e-session I used three cameras, two analogue film cameras, 1950s Leica M2 + 1980s Fuji GS645, and my digital Leica M9.  Colour photos are film and black and white ones are digital.  I love the look of film and I think the softer images and colours really suit wedding photography and engagements sessions.  The film photos below are in a style I plan to take into 2015 for all weddings and engagements.

Sarah and Mike’s Wedding was my second Saxon Mill wedding and it was great to be back. The building has great character and even better surroundings with the views across the River Avon to Guys Cliffe.  The day actually started in the morning at Chesford Grange Hotel for Sarah’s bridal preparation photos.  From there we moved onto the Saxon Mill for the wedding ceremony that was held upstairs.  It was not a huge wedding so the room worked well for the number of guests.  After the ceremony we did group photos and wedding portraits outside then back upstairs to sit down to eat for the wedding breakfast, speeches and cake cutting.  My day finished after the first dance and it was then time to pack up and drive back to Coventry.

Sarah and Mike had opted for additional film photography photos so I used both analogue cameras and digital.  Here are a selection of photos from the wedding. Firstly the digital images using my Leica M9 –

Coventry Wedding Photographer – Location Shoot

Venue for Engagement Session: Bishops Park, Fulham, London

I caught the train from Coventry and met Alex and Andy on a wet morning in November on Fulham Palace Road.  We decided to grab a coffee in a hope the rain would blow over.  It gave us chance to get to know each other and for me to explain the cameras I would be using.  I had the digital Leica M9 to capture the majority of the photos and also my 1950s Leica M3 film camera.  I had a part roll of black and white Kodak T-Max 100 to finish in the camera and would then shoot colour film, Fujicolor C200.  I normally use Kodak Portra but C200 can be quite nice too.

We were in luck. The rain stopped so we took a walk along the bank of the River Thames in an area known as Bishops Park and I got shooting.  I have a very relaxed photography style and I would like to think that Alex and Andy were soon at ease in front of the camera.  My small Leica cameras are very friendly and in no way intimidating so all in all it lead to a fun and sucessful morning.  I left London with a smile and felt very fortunate to have met two very kind and genuine people.  I had never met Alex and Andy until today but the morning was like enjoying good company with friends.  I am now counting down to Alex and Andy’s wedding in 2015!

I met the couple at Lord Leycester Hospital, Warwick which is an amazing wedding venue. We had the wedding ceremony in one of the great halls and then managed to get the group photos done in the gardens before the rain started. Everyone then moved down the road to Warwick Arms Hotel for the wedding breakfast and for the evening guests arriving.

Here is a selection of photos from the wedding day. Gemma and Ted purchased my black and white wedding photography package which includes all digital images in B&W tones. I had planned to do some additional medium format film photography but we didn’t get chance due to time constraints.

Digital Photos – Leica M9 + Leica Noctilux 50mm f1.0 at f1 for most of the day (including all group photos)(excluding some 21-28mm wide angle lens shots, 90mmf2 Summicron photos for the speeches and the 75mmf2 Cron photos for detail images).

Teresa & Wojciech – Romantic Evening with the Leica Noctilux

Matt Osborne Photography (Coventry UK)

Leica M9 location shoot in Sopot, Poland.  On my last evening in Poland I organised a couple photoshoot shot in a similar style to an engagement photo session but perhaps with a more romantic look to it.  Engagement shoots can be very  relaxed such as a countryside walk or something more stylised if the couple are happy in front of the camera.  There really is no limit and I tailor each engagement session to the couples requirements and taste.

Teresa and Wojciech arrived later than planned so the entire shoot was shot using my Leica Noctilux 50mm f1.0 (v2) at f1 and a high ISO between ISO 640 and ISO 1000 approximately.  Teresa is an agency represented catwalk model so was used to being in front of the camera however for boyfriend Wojciech it was his first time.  Wojciech was surprisingly relaxed in front of the camera and I was like a fly on the wall for the most part.  We enjoyed a coffee in the hotel restaurant, did some photos on the beach with the last available daylight then finished in the hotel room. The entire shoot was shot using available light only so the Leica Noctilux lens was a life saver with it’s wide f1 aperture.  I would have preferred to use off camera lights but had travelled light to Poland so didn’t have the option.

Here are a few samples from the shoot.  All are Leica M9 black and white in camera JPEGs:

If you are looking to book a pre-wedding engagement shoot this gives you an idea of what is possible using basic (albeit ‘exotic’ camera equipment) where I didn’t even speak the same language.  For more examples see my engagement photography posts on this blog.

Here are some of the photos taken this morning with my Leica M9 camera. I wanted to showcase to couples who are looking to have an engagement shoot or book a wedding photographer what is possible for you. I aim to provide wedding couples with a mix of relaxed reportage style candid photos throughout the day plus some posed high fashion wedding portraits as seen here. This is my style of Leica wedding photography.

This morning Harriett and Ashley modelled for me and Donna kindly came along as my lighting assistant. I used the same lighting and equipment that I use on a wedding day and going forward I plan to take an assistant with me for every shoot (feel free to get in touch if…

Leica Engagement Shoot (2)

Yesterday I had chance to do another couple shoot with my Leica M9 camera. We did an engagement themed shoot with model friends Raki and Terri. Neither of them had worked together before but they gelled together really well and it made for an easy to direct shoot.

For most weddings, couples do not set aside enough time to get a wide range of natural yet creative wedding portraits. Many couples are also on a tight budget so skip the engagement shoot option. I organise shoots like this one with Raki and Terri to show ‘real’ couples what is possible for them if they opt for either an engagement shoot or book me as their wedding photographer. I am not looking to shoot a wedding every weekend as I don’t want to mass…

Venue for Engagement Shoot: Coombe Abbey Hotel, Coventry + Coventry Studio

Pre-wedding engagement photography a using a Leica M9 camera.  You may recognise Maria from past Flickr photos I have shared as she has modelled for me before.  Maria asked if I could do a black and white studio photography shoot for her and Dior who recently got engaged.  I agreed but recommended we also did an outside location shoot too as that is where the Leica Noctilux 50mm f1.0 v2 lens really comes into it’s own.  With that all agreed we did a part one and part two shoot, with the first being in the studio and getting Dior used to the camera and the second at the popular Coventry wedding venue, Coombe Abbey Hotel as it is only down the road from them.

(You might note that this was also the location of Sukhi and Raechelle’s engagement session photos!  Coombe has extensive grounds that are very diverse so give a broad range of potential photo oppotunities).

Part 1: Coventry Photography Studio

For the studio images the couple wanted edgy fashion posed looking photos in black and white tones, with less of the standard happy smiley engagement looking faces.  I posed the guys and lit them accordingly.

Part 2: On location – Coombe Abbey Hotel, Coventry

For the location images the Maria and Dior wanted the traditional happy smiley (more commercial photography) looking photos.  Again I posed the couple and but then also evoked the emotions to create the moment to be captured in each image.  A couple can be madly in love with each other but if it is not visual it will not come across in the engagement photos.  This also stands true for posing couples for wedding photography.  Every couple is of course different and some make it easier for me than others.  Maria and Dior are naturally very smiley and look good in front of the camera so that made for a fun shoot.
